A trip to Southeastern Nigeria<\/a><\/strong> focused on learning about the history of Biafra<\/strong>, as well as the traditional tribes<\/strong> that live in the region.<\/p>\n

Despite the war trauma, still felt in the region, former Biafra is an amazing place to explore during this trip. It houses a rich cultural and natural heritage<\/strong> and unique art treasures. The trip will start in Port Harcourt<\/strong>, where we will meet the Ijaw<\/strong> fishing community of Okrika Island<\/strong>. From the coast we will move to Umuahia<\/strong>, former capital of Biafra, where we will visit the War Museum. We will continue the trip visiting the heart of Igboland<\/strong>. We will have the chance to experience an Igbo masquerade<\/strong> and visit the ancestors\u2019 shrine<\/strong> that houses some of the oldest wooden statues still existing in Africa (out of museums).<\/p>\n

Finally, we will visit the Cross River<\/strong> region, a beautiful natural area with forests and creeks, where we will meet two ethnic groups<\/strong>: the Oron<\/strong> and the Efik<\/strong>. We will enjoy the unique colonial architecture<\/strong> that we will visit in small river towns such as Creek Town<\/strong>, out of Calabar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u25ba Throughout the trip we will go further into the history of Biafra<\/h3>\n

During this trip to Southeastern Nigeria, we will visit the War Museum in Umuahia<\/strong>, where we will find interesting war vehicles handmade by Biafra army. Also, we will visit the bunker<\/strong> where General Ojukwu<\/strong> declared the secession of Southeast Nigeria, taking the name of the Biafra Bay (another name for the Gulf of Guinea).<\/p>\n

\u25ba We will learn about the culture of different tribes<\/h3>\n

Ijaw tribe<\/h4>\n

On Okrika Island, we will meet an Ijaw community<\/strong>. This tribe lives from fishing and trade. Despite modernity, the Ijaw from Okrika have kept several traditions alive, such as the ‘leblouh<\/strong>‘ of Iria. This practice consists of fattening and painting the bodies of marriageable young women. We will meet a group of these girls to learn about this tradition.<\/p>\n

Igbo tribe<\/h4>\n

During this trip to Biafra, we will visit some small villages as well as Umuahia<\/strong>, an important political and cultural center for the Igbo people<\/strong>, where we will enjoy a traditional dance. Also, we will visit Ohafia<\/strong>, sacred city of the Igbo tribe<\/strong>. There, we will find the last big religious temple<\/strong> dedicated to the ancestors. We will be able to admire Igbo art<\/strong> at its best and one of the best examples of vernacular architecture<\/strong> in West Africa.<\/p>\n

Oron tribe<\/h4>\n

On this trip to Biafra, we will have the opportunity to meet the Oron tribe<\/strong>, a minority known for their wooden funerary statues<\/strong>. In addition, we will have the honor of being received by King Oron in his palace.<\/p>\n

Efik tribe<\/h4>\n

In Creek Town,<\/strong> we will meet the local chief and learn about the Efik<\/strong> alphabet.<\/p>\n

\u25ba We will enjoy the English colonial architecture<\/h3>\n

During this trip to Biafra, we will walk through the streets of Calabar<\/strong>, one of the oldest colonial settlements on the Nigerian coast, in search of the old colonial houses<\/strong> made of wood, as well as the colonial church and the museum, located in the former house of the British governor. Also, we will be able to admire beautiful examples in Creek Town<\/strong> and some other towns on our way back to Port Harcourt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
