Trip to Burundi to discover the hidden gem of Central Africa. This ancient mountain kingdom is one of the poorest and most traditional countries in Africa. It receives very little tourism and that it is what makes it so attractive. Last Places\u2019 team of anthropologists have designed a unique itinerary that visits the different tribal groups that inhabit the rugged terrain of Burundi and go deep into the country\u2019s complex and fascinating history. In Gitega we will experience the soul of this old African kingdom, or what it is left of it, and in Lake Tanganyika we will meet Hutu fishermen and enjoy the Burundian wilderness. We will learn about life by Lake Tanganyika<\/h3>\n

We’ll begin our trip to Burundi with a stroll along the banks of the Tanganyika River, admiring its deep waters and observing artisanal fishing from illuminated dugout canoes. At dusk, we’ll explore the colonial architecture and get our first glimpse of Bujumbura, the economic capital. There, we’ll visit the market and the viewpoint overlooking the Rift.<\/p>\n

Rumonge and the Kigwena Reserve<\/h3>\n

Following the coast to Rumonge, we’ll visit the monument commemorating the meeting between Livingstone and Stanley. Also, we’ll walk through the Kigwena Forest Reserve. In this peri-Guinean forest, we’ll listen to olive baboons and spot grey bush babies.<\/p>\n

Karera Falls and Tutsi culture<\/h3>\n

We’ll continue south to discover Karera Falls. There, we’ll spot monkeys hopping through the trees. Then, we’ll visit a Tutsi herding village. We’ll discuss their pastoral tradition, once dominant in the regional economy.<\/p>\n

Spring of the White Nile and arrival at Gitega<\/h3>\n

During this trip to Burundi, we’ll visit the legendary source of the White Nile. We’ll admire the “Caput Nili” pyramid, which symbolizes the source of the great river. Then, we’ll climb the green hills toward Gitega, the former royal capital.<\/p>\n

Gishora drums and royal legacy at Gitega<\/h3>\n

On this trip to Burundi, we’ll explore Gitega, the birthplace of the Mwami. We’ll visit the National Museum and see historical artifacts. Also, we’ll watch a performance of Gishora drummers, guardians of mystical secrets. We’ll learn about the function of the Karyenda and Rukinzo, sacred drums that marked the agricultural calendar.<\/p>\n

Intore Dance and Sailing on Bird Lake<\/h3>\n

We’ll continue to Kirundo and witness the Intore war dance. Then, we’ll cruise across Bird Lake. We’ll observe warbling cisticolas and other endemic birds. En route, we’ll visit the Teza tea plantations.<\/p>\n

Meeting with the Batwa community<\/h3>\n

During this trip to Burundi, we’ll visit a Batwa village, the country’s first inhabitants. We’ll share lunch, learn pottery-making techniques, and witness a tribal dance. During our visit, we’ll try to understand their struggle to maintain their identity and rights.<\/p>\n

Muramvya Royal Tomb<\/h3>\n

We’ll cross Bugarama and climb to the royal tomb of Muramvya IV, the last Burundian ruler. Also, we’ll visit neighbouring villages to learn about local handicrafts.<\/p>\n

Rusizi National Park<\/h3>\n

Finally, we’ll explore Rusizi National Park, a mosaic of lagoons and palm groves. We’ll observe hippos, crocodiles, and more than 350 bird species.<\/p>\n
