Last Places has been operating in Papua New Guinea since 2022. We have explored many regions and we have decided to promote areas that are ignored by tourist groups. This trip to Papua New Guinea combine two mountain areas, Mount Hagen Highlands and Simbai Hills, with the Mekeo Coast, south of Port Moresby.<\/p>\n

In this ethnographic expedition, guided by anthropologist Joan Riera, founder of Last Places, we will deepen the experience with the Simbu tribe (most of Last Places\u2019 team in Papua New Guinea belongs to the Simbu tribe) and experience their daily lives and rituals. We will also visit the Roro and Mekeo tattooed grandmothers near the capital and we will go up to Simbai Hills (2.144 mts.) to meet the Kalam tribe, who were contacted by American missionaries as late as 1968. These people still hold unique traditions and a rich cosmology we will try to understand during our stay with them.<\/p>\n

We will hire a private plane to reach the Kalam people. Last, but not least, we will spend quality time with another rarely visited tribe, the Sili Muli tribe, amazing agriculturalists with very special forms of dressing and decorating their faces for special occasions. We will use domestic flights, do some soft hiking, take a private plane and sleep in hotels and local clean guest houses located near the tribal villages.<\/p>\n

Port Moresby<\/h3>\n

We’ll begin our trip to Papua New Guinea in its capital, Port Moresby. There, we’ll discover its bay, its stilt towns, and its vibrant fish market. We’ll delve into the National Park to observe birds of paradise, cassowaries, and tree kangaroos. Also, we’ll visit the National Parliament and Museum, where we’ll gain an overview of the country’s cultural diversity.<\/p>\n

Tari and the world of the Huli<\/h3>\n

We’ll continue by flying to the Tari Valley, home to the Huli tribe. There, we’ll observe their colourful headdresses, ceremonial songs, and ritual dances. Huli men decorate their bodies with clay and feathers and cultivate the land using ancient methods. We’ll immerse ourselves in a universe of masks, songs, and mythical stories.<\/p>\n

Mount Hagen and the Enga Nation<\/h3>\n

We’ll continue our trip to Papua New Guinea by road to Mount Hagen, the heart of the Highlands. From there, we’ll travel under escort to the Enga region, where we’ll meet the Sili Muli tribe. We’ll be amazed by their ritual attire and their deep connection to the land. Also, we’ll explore the markets and speak with tribal leaders who still maintain their traditional authority.<\/p>\n

The remote Simbai Valley<\/h3>\n

We’ll take a private flight to reach the Simbai Valley, one of the most inaccessible places in the country. There, we’ll be welcomed by the Kalam community, famous for their enormous headdresses decorated with thousands of green scarabs and bird-of-paradise feathers. During this trip to Papua New Guinea, we’ll live with the Kalam people, participate in their ceremonies, and immerse ourselves deeply in their way of life. We’ll learn about initiation rituals, the uses of pork fat, and the symbolism of body ornaments.<\/p>\n

Simbu and rural life in the Highlands<\/h3>\n

We’ll return by air to Mount Hagen and continue east by road. After crossing the beautiful Waghy Valley, we will reach Bogo, where we’ll be hosted by a Simbu family. This intimate experience will give us a deeper understanding of the daily life, beliefs, and spirituality of these rural communities.<\/p>\n

Asaro, clay warriors<\/h3>\n

In the Goroka region, we will meet the Asaro people, famous for their clay masks. During this trip to Papua New Guinea, we will visit a traditional village and hear stories about their warrior past. We will accompany the Asaro in their rituals and celebrate their hospitality.<\/p>\n

Tattoos and dances among the Roro and the Mekeo<\/h3>\n

To conclude this trip to Papua New Guinea, we will travel by road to the remote coastal region of Bereina. There, we will meet the Roro and Mekeo people, guardians of ancient rituals of body painting and tattooing. We will present ourselves in front of the village elders and participate in a Mekeo ceremony with songs and dances. Fortunately, we will photograph the last original tattoos and hear the stories of the elderly women.<\/p>\n
